Early signs of Lyme disease include fever, chills, headaches, weariness, aches in the muscles and joints, swollen lymph nodes, and the disease's signature skin rash (erythema migrans). The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimate that erythema migrans affects roughly 70% to 80% of affected individuals globally. Untreated Lyme disease treatment, however, can cause additional discomfort, such as nerve pain, swelling of the knees, facial palsy, increased heart palpitations, and inflammation of the brain and spinal cord. It can also cause arthritis with severe joint pain, severe headaches, neck stiffness, and intermittent pain in muscles, tendons, joints, and bones.
