Any of a class of thermosetting resins made by dissolving a low-molecular-weight unsaturated polyester in a vinyl monomer and then copolymerizing the two to form a hard, durable plastic substance. Unsaturated polyesters cast into moulds with no reinforcement are used to make bowling balls.Because of its excellent performance and versatility, this polymer has been at the centre of a true revolution in the boat industry. Because of their design versatility, light weight, lower system costs, and mechanical strength, unsaturated polyester resins are also widely employed in the automotive sector (car industry). This material is also utilised in construction, particularly in the fabrication of stove hobs, roof tiles, bathroom accessories, but also pipes, ducts, and tanks.
Unsaturated polyesters are the third most common type of thermoset moulding resin. They are made by condensing a diol with a mixture of saturated and unsaturated anhydrides. When cross-linked with reactive vinyl monomers such as styrene, the condensation products (reactive resins) form extremely durable structures and coatings.A wide number of businesses, notably Ashland, Reichhold, and Royal DSM, manufacture Unsaturated Polyester Resins on a large scale. They are often offered as a liquid in an unsaturated and reactive solvent, typically styrene. There are several grades available, each with a different viscosity, unsaturation, and cure speed. Deltech, Polynt, Dow, and others manufacture DCPD modified resins.
