A common disinfectant and fixative, Paraformaldehyde is a white crystalline substance. Due to decomposition, polyformaldehyde produces a strong, unpleasant smell that is similar to formaldehyde's. It is made up of 9–11% water and 89–91% formaldehyde. The two main techniques used to produce paraformaldehyde are vacuum drying and spray drying. It is potentially carcinogenic and poisonous.
Particleboard, medium-density fiberboard, and plywood are made utilizing melamine, phenol, or other reactants and resin adhesives made from Paraformaldehyde. Trimethylolpropane, melamine resin, urea resin, ethylene glycol & ion exchange resin, pentaerythritol, phenolic resin, and N-methylolacrylamide are also produced using it. Due to decomposition, this smallest polyoxymethylene emits a powerful, unpleasant smell resembling that of formaldehyde.
