M-1978 Koksan – North Korea’s 170 mm SPG - TankHistoria

Do you want to know M-1978 Koksan – North Korea’s 170 mm SPG? The Koksan is a North Korean light SPG armed with a 170 mm howitzer. First fielded in the 1960s, it was one of the first SPGs fielded by North Korea, alongside the M59/Type 59. It served as a standard for other SPGs developed by North Korea and has also been exported to many third-world nations through North Korea’s international arms deals. While its raw firepower was unrivaled compared to most other vehicles at the time, its mobility became a major weakness due to a lack of suspension and poor road performance. However, it is still capable of destroying lightly armored vehicles and bunkers if used correctly.

By the late 1970s, production of the Koksan was ceased in favor of lighter SPGs like the T-62 and Type 59. A number of examples are also known to have been sold to Iran during the 1980s, likely as part of an attempt by North Korea to curry favor with Iran following the revolution there.
