The standard procedure for BPH, TURP, has been used for years, and a new technique, prostatic urethral lift, is promising. Another new technique is water jet ablation, which is undergoing clinical trials. The most common method of treating BPH is transurethral resection of the prostate, known as TURP, which involves inserting a rigid instrument called a resectoscope through the urethra. The resectoscope is charged and allows the urologist to remove the prostate core without cutting into the prostate itself. During the procedure, the patient may undergo local or general anesthesia.
