It is regarded as a recyclable, non-petroleum based chemical feedstock in the business world. It is widely used in application industries like petroleum, agriculture, paints & coatings, and pharmaceuticals as a result of these qualities. Growing environmental concerns about the use of fossil fuels have sparked an increase in the production of suitable biomass-based platform chemicals made from renewable alternatives. Furfural has also been chosen by the US Department of Energy as one of the top 30 platform chemicals made from biomass.
The Quaker Oats Company invented furfural production in 1921 using bagasse, corncobs, and oat hulls. Around 300 to 700 kilotons of furfural were produced globally in 2014, with China producing the lion's share of that amount. Furfural has undergone significant process improvements, and as a result, it is now used in a growing number of applications and has become a common biomass-based chemical.
