Fencing is the name given to a group of three combat sports. Modern fencing consists of three disciplines: foil, épée, and saber (often saber), with winning points determined by the weapon's contact with an opponent. Singlestick, a fourth discipline, made its debut at the 1904 Olympics, but was later dropped and is no longer utilized in modern fencing. Fencing was one of the earliest sports to be included in the Olympic Games. The current sport arose near the end of the nineteenth century, based on traditional swordsmanship skills, with the Italian school adapting the historical European martial art of classical fencing and the French school improving the Italian style. Fencing in the modern era is separated into three categories, each of which uses a different technique.
