Overview of the organic chemical 4 tert-butylphenol
4 tert butylphenol is one of the most common chemicals used in the making of compact discs, DVD and CD rom manufacturers. It functions as a monomer during the chemical synthesis of polycarbionate, phenolic and epoxy resins. It is a water soluble organic compound with the chemical formula (CH3)3CC6H40H. Another synonym of 4 tertbutyphenol is ptbp chemical or para tertiary butyl phenol. This organic compound is known to have a phenolic odor as it is one of the three isomeric tert butyl phenols.
How is PTBP made?
Para tertiary butylphenol is manufactured by acid induced catalysation of phenol with isobutene. In this process, 2 tertbutylpenol is obtained as a by-product. However, there are more than one ways to achieve 4 tertbutylphenol as the end result. It can also be obtained by performing different trans alkylation reactions.
The most common applications of 4 tert butylphenol
As mentioned earlier, the most common application of ptbp includes manufacturing of discs, DVDs and CD roms. Other than that this organic chemical has also found its application in adhesives, shoes, neoprene glues. It is a widely used product in the leather industry and is used in the production of car components. Some of the lesser known but important uses of ptbp chemical include manufacturisation of polycarbonates, brake linings, printing inks, laminates, casting mold making, phenol and epoxy raisins box preservatives.
Industry applications of 4 tert butylphenol include- polycarbonate chain terminators, fragrances, oil chemicals, point to point depressors, emulsion breakers, lubricants, glycidyl ethers, plasticizers, intermediates, starches, motor oil additives, insecticides, carbon and energy supplements in the culture of sphingobium fuliginis strains and insecticides. Ptbp chemical is also used in the making of 4-t butyl-o-benzoquinone. It also works as a reagent for the study of hydroxylation of PTBP chemical.
Let us have a look at its physical and chemical properties:
-
The boiling point of tert butylphenol is 236-238 degrees celsius.
-
The melting point of tert butylphenol is 96-101 degrees celsius.
-
Its density is 0.922g/cm3 at 100 degrees celsius.
-
Vapor pressure is 310 Pa at 100 degrees celsius.
-
The CAS number of this chemical is 98-54-4.
Reactivity Profile: Even though 4 tertbutyplenol belongs to the alcohol family, it does not behave like alcohol. It has hydroxyl in its structure but behaves like a weak acid. 98-54-4 is incompatible with reducing substances like hydrides, nitrides, alkaline metals and sulphides. When reacting with other chemicals, ptbp can release flammable gasses into the atmosphere which can ignite and polymerise the organic compound. It is a phenol and phenols are likely to be sulfonated and nitrated.
Precautionary measure to take: If you are working with the chemical and it gets spilled, immediately isolate the area within the 50 metre radius of the chemical. If the chemical is solid then isolate upto 20 meters radius where the chemical is spilled. If the chemical catches fire, use CO2 or carbon dioxide, dry chemicals or halon to extinguish the fire. Avoid using water in such cases. If a vehicle has caught fire immediately evacuate the area within 800 meters of the vehicle.
It spilled if only a small amount of chemical, there is no need for panic as it likely won’t catch huge fires. Absorb the liquid with an absorbent paper and wash all the contaminated surfaces first with an alcohol and then with soap and water. Refrain from establishing contact with the affected area unless you get a green signal from a safety professional.
When handling 4 tertbutylphenol wear protective clothing and cover your face with a NIOSH-approved half face respirator which has an organic vapor or acid gas cartridge. Also ensure to put on rubber gloves, butyl rubber gloves are advisable over latex gloves. If you notice a tear or puncture in the gloves after directly making contact with the chemical, discard the gloves and get a new pair immediately. The chemical must be kept in cold storage at all times to avoid any risk of fire.
