The Mind Set of the Successful Entrepreneur

The Mind Set of the Successful Entrepreneur

What sets apart a successful entrepreneurfrom people who are not successful, whether in their own small business, or ina job? Looking externally, the entrepreneur is a normal, everyday person justlike everyone else - they need to eat, have a roof over their head, they haveobligations, to themselves, their families, their communities.

They have their own idiosyncrasies, fearsand challenges too, just like everyone. Yet, somehow they have taken their energy, resources and talents and produced something extraordinary - a business whichadds value to society, is profitable, and with those businesses and their livesare leading a life of purpose, profits and passion.

Putting a regular person next to the successfulentrepreneur, at first glance, you would not be able to tell them apart. Yetthese two proverbial examples would be doing drastically different things whichlead them to significantly different results. To find the reason, we will haveto look at the root cause of their actions, which is the mindset.

Mindset

The mindset of a person encompasses severaldifferent things - how he views and defines this life of ours on Earth, hispurpose, his self, his beliefs and his values. It is this mindset of the personwhich defines how he views or interprets what is going on around him, and howhe gives them meaning. It is the meaning of these events and his situationsthat will determine his emotional state and thus the decisions he makes. Thesedecisions will in turn determine his actions, and his results.

It is because the results of the successfulentrepreneur and the ordinary man are so different, that we can attribute theroot cause of it to be the difference in mindset. So what makes the mindset ofthe successful entrepreneur different?

Owning Your Own Destiny

First and foremost, the successful entrepreneur does notattribute the reason for his success or failure on luck, other people, thegovernment, the economy. He may or may not believe in the presence of a divinebeing, or the one-ness of the universe, but regardless lives by the saying 'Ifit is to be, it is up to me.'

In other words, the first step to beingsuccessful is that of owning your own life and fate. Know what is within yourcontrol, such as your emotions, your actions, the people that you associatewith, and your attitude. Successful people bulldoze past bad luck, obstacles, naysayers, fears and risks through believing that whatever they envision, theycan make happen with the right approach and perseverance.

Vision

One common trait found in successful peopleis that they have a strong vision for what they want to achieve. For example,Bill Gates' vision when he started Microsoft was that every household wouldhave a personal computer. He believed in the positive life-changing force thatcomputers represented and developed a strong and motivating personal vision forit. It is described that this big vision pulls the entrepreneur towards it,rather than him having to push tiresomely.

Doing Whatever It Takes

The successful entrepreneur also commits todoing whatever it takes to making his vision come true. This is the definitionof commitment and truly what makes them succeed, for most people run at thefirst sight of blood. The moment something goes wrong, they say, "That'sit, this is not the right thing for me. I knew that it wouldn't workanyway." Successful entrepreneurs know that their success, or at leasttheir next level of success, lies behind the obstacle that lies just behindthem.

How many storiesof successful entrepreneurs have you heard, where the entrepreneur loseshis house, his car, his relationships, in order to see through his business? The lessons from these stories are not proverbial. In your journey as anentrepreneur you will be challenged, and there will be times where you
