Perfume Samples and Decants
Perfume Samples and Decants also called perfume tester bottles and small perfume vials, are an inexpensive way to test out various perfumes before committing to a full-size bottle.
At their most basic, these are small glass containers in which you can put a few drops of your favorite perfume and then close it up for several days or weeks, allowing the fragrant oil to absorb into the glass. Sometimes the sample is covered with a lid that allows the scent to come through and mix with the air inside the container. Other times, however, the sample is just left open to allow air to freely circulate around the inside.
In any case, after a few days or weeks, you can either sniff the sample under your nose or simply unscrew it and see whether or not it smells as strong as you remember. If it’s not quite as strong as you remember, this may be because the sample has lost its original potency over time—either due to exposure to light or constant opening and closing of the container.
