Agas spring is an example of a mechanical spring, which, unlike an ordinarymechanical spring which relies on mechanical elastic deformation alone to storemechanical potential energy, uses compressed gas within an enclosed pistonfixed to a revolving cylinder fitted with a piston rod to pneumaticallycompress the gas, then releasing it at the point where it is needed. The compressedgas is pumped into the piston and the air compression provides the spring'spotential energy. Because of its unique design, a gas spring provides a numberof key advantages:
First,gasspring requires very little maintenance: the stored mechanical energyneeds to be compressed and released without any additional pressure beingintroduced to the system. There is nothing special to do when installing gassprings, other than making sure the cylinder seals well (a common mistake assome cylinders can leak air into the cylinder because of poor seal design). Aswith any mechanical device, the more users can rely on it to work withoutproblems, the more expensive and complex the system will be over time. However,the savings in money and complexity of operation are well worth the initialinvestment, because a gas spring has much higher reliability than a springdesigned to store mechanical energy (e.g., an electrical motor).
