Benefits of modernising your basement

If you have a basement space in your home, the likelihood is that it is either an abandoned space that has been forgotten about, or it is used for storage of things you don’t really need! Modernising your basement means that you can add another element of space to your home – and you can choose what you use it for, whether you need another bedroom, office space, or even a home gym. There are many benefits that come with redesigning your basement, such as:

  •          Boosts the resale value: adding an extra room to your home allows you to boost the resale value. Not only will it increase your home’s overall value, but it will also mean that your home will look more attractive to buyers if you decide to sell, and buyers won’t have to spend their own money renovating their new basement.

  •         More space: One of the most obvious advantages that come along with renovating your basement is the new space that you can create within your home, that you can design in whichever way you like.

  •          Increases the value of your home: Renovating your basement means that the value of your home will increase, meaning that you’re likely to make back the money you’ll spend whilst renovating, and even a little bit more!

If you think that renovating and modernising the basement in your home would be beneficial to you, read on to find out 4 steps that you can take to make your basement a space that you can be proud of.

      1.      Clear your space

The best place to start when modernising your basement is to get rid of the things that you store in there that you don’t use. Set aside time to clear out your old items, so that you can get a good idea of the space you have to work with. Once you have done this, you can start to put together an idea of how you’d like to modernise your new space. If your basement is dusty, or dirty, be sure to give it a wash-down before the renovation starts as this will save time when it comes to getting the work underway.

      2.       Insulate your basement

Usually, the walls of your basement are simply made up of cinder blocks that don’t offer any kind of insulation. Choosing to add insulation in the form of spray foam, foam board or foam and fibreglass insulation means that you can benefit from added comfort in your new space, as well as being able to keep the heat in your home more efficiently.

      3.       Painting and flooring

So now that your basement is suitably cleaned and insulated, you can start making it look a little more like you’d pictured it. If the walls in your basement are looking a little worse for wear, adding a coat of paint can make all the difference, you can even choose a paint that is washable if you’re worried about it becoming dirty in the future. It is always advised to paint your walls before you add the flooring, that way you won’t get your brand-new floor splattered with paint! When it comes to choosing your flooring, it is best not to use carpet. This is due to the fact your basement has the chance to become flooded, meaning your carpet would be ruined, and wood is also not advised as it can result in mould forming if any moisture is present. Think about using materials like laminate or vinyl.

     4.       Design and details

Once your basement is all spruced up, you can start adding your finishing touches to create your new space and bring your design to life. For example, if you’ve decided to turn your new basement into an office, you can add new office furniture like a desk and chair, as well as other items that make the room more comfortable. If you’ve decided to make it into a game room for your kids, you could make it colourful, and add artwork to the walls and modern lighting. The possibilities are endless!
