Inhalational anesthetics, also known as volatile anesthetic agents, are used to initiate and maintain general anesthesia and sedation. They are administered via inhalation, particularly in individuals who are unable to receive anesthetics via intravenous or other methods. Sevoflurane, desflurane, and nitrous oxide are the most often used inhalational anesthetics today. Sevoflurane has a rapid onset of effect and a faster rate of recovery.
Inhalational anesthetics cause respiratory depression, a decrease in arterial blood pressure, an increase in cerebral blood flow, as well as a decrease in cerebral metabolic demand. Nausea is the most prevalent side effect of inhalation and aesthetic medications. Dose-dependent hepatotoxicity can be caused by halogenated aesthetics.
