With the arrival of spring, many of us are eager to start spring cleaning. After a long winter, you’re probably looking for ways to freshen things up and bring a little more vitality into your spaces. As you gather your spring-cleaning supplies, from microfiber cloths to new vacuum bags, don’t forget to reach for the essential oils. Why essential oils? Many aromas are ideal for spring cleaning. They offer refreshing and invigorating scents while helping you cleanse your home of the dreariness of winter. Here are a few ways essential oils can enhance your spring-cleaning routine and help you bring springtime aromas into your home.
A Breath of Fresh Air
Many of us are missing a lively atmosphere in our homes. By the end of winter, the air in our homes can start to seem stale or stagnant. One essential oil to reach for is peppermint oil. You’re likely familiar with the aroma of peppermint; it’s a clean, bright, and bold scent bursting with vitality. It makes for a great revitalizing aroma for the general atmosphere of your home, and you can diffuse it in any room. Of course, if the scent of peppermint is too invigorating, try blending it with other scents. Try it with Douglas fir essential oil to create a minty, woody, and fresh scent. Or try wild orange or tangerine essential oils for a kick of zesty citrus with tones of mint. These blended aromas add complexity while taming their individual scents to help you achieve a breath of fresh air throughout your home.
Tackling Dust and Home Surfaces
If there’s one thing we could all use less of, it’s dust. It gets everywhere. Going into spring, it can seem like there’s more of it than usual. But it’s nothing a microfiber cloth and a lemon oil spray can’t tackle. If there’s one essential oil that’s a spring-cleaning hero, it’s lemon oil. Not only is it a refreshing and invigorating citrus aroma, but it’s also great at helping to dust and clean surfaces. Mix lemon essential oil with water in a spray bottle, and you’re good to go. It’s a simple cleaning agent without any harsh chemicals or synthetics. Mist into your microfiber cloth to create an ideal dusting tool or spritz directly onto surfaces. It’s great for just about any table or counter, including wood surfaces, but it’s always a good idea to try a spot treatment on any delicate surfaces first. You can also use lemon oil to create a wood polish by adding a few drops of lemon oil to olive oil.
From Laundry to the Linens
As you clean and refresh various parts of your home, you’ll no doubt want to refresh the fabrics of your home too. From linens to curtains, furniture to rugs—and just about everything in between—there are a lot of fabrics to refresh. Start by laundering what you can—or what makes sense to put through the laundry. To supplement this, reach for the essential oils. Which aromas you choose is up to you, but there are a few scents that work exceptionally well for fabrics. Lavender oil is the go-to for many people. Thanks to its light floral aroma, it’s spring in a bottle. Tea tree oil is an excellent option if you’re looking for something a little more herbaceous or earthy. For something citrusy and clean, lemongrass essential oil is a great aroma to try. Or rotate different scents through spring. It’s just a matter of mixing your essential oil of choice with water in a spray bottle then misting the fabrics you want to refresh.
