Pectin is a carbohydrate found in fruits that is especially abundant in the rinds of citrus fruits and apples. It acts as a gelling agent and aids in the solidification of jams. A pectin formulation, with the claim that it could reduce bleeding in a variety of conditions. The active ingredient was colloidal polygalacturonic acid esters derived from apple Pectin Market. It was administered locally, orally, by subcutaneous or intravenous injection, or per rectum. The solution for local and oral administration contained 5% pectin (3% for the intravenous preparation. The pectin had a hemostatic effect, but this was purely based on subjective clinical judgement. There have never been any randomised controlled trials with quantification of blood loss.
