Scotch whisky (Scottish Gaelic: uisge-beatha; Scots: Scots whisky/whiskies, whisky; commonly referred to simply as whisky or Scotch) is malt whisky or grain whisky (or a blend of the two) produced in Scotland. Originally, all Scotch whisky was made from malted barley. Whisky made from wheat and rye was first introduced by commercial distilleries. Scotland had Scotch whisky distilleries operating as of 2020.
All Scottish Whisky must be aged for at least three years in oak barrels. Any numerical age statement on a bottle of Scotch whisky must reflect the age of the youngest whisky used to produce that product. Guaranteed-age whisky is a whisky with an age statement. A whisky with no age statement is one that does not have an age statement. (NAS) whisky, with the only guarantee that all of the whisky in the bottle is at least three years old.
