Where to Find Social Media Marketing Internships

Now that you have the tools you need to apply for a great internship, it's time to start applying. When it comes to applying for internships, it can be difficult to know where to start. It's important to consider whether you want to transfer for your internship ($$$), what type of company you want to work for, and how many applications the company will receive (since Google will receive thousands of applications, But your local marketing agency may only get two or three dozen). Here are our recommendations in order of how you should search for internships:

Check Your School/Department's List of Internship Opportunities: Your school or major prospect has a mailing list that sends emails about internship opportunities. These are great first steps for a few reasons. These companies have contacted your school to send students an email, which means they already know your education and abilities are likely to be looking for an intern.

Looking for Interns Search Local Businesses: Start by looking for companies with a 'Careers' or 'Opportunities' page on their website (psst.. probably all of them). If you are interested in interning for the company - even if they are not actively advertising internships - send an application. You'll compete with a smaller candidate pool and increase your chances of landing a social media marketing internship.

Search Local Businesses That Might Not Be Looking for Interns: If you want an even smaller candidate pool, send an email to a company that may not necessarily be looking for interns. This should be done sparingly but can be especially effective if you find that you are passionate about the company and its mission. On the company's website, find a hiring contact email and send an email to inquire about (let's say real, unpaid) internships for school credit, and attach a copy of your resume. Worst case scenario: They say no, but they already have your resume on hand for future opportunities.

Online Internship Listing Sites: Online internship listings are the easiest to find, but it's important to remember that you are the only one applying for these positions. These websites are great resources but don't be afraid to apply for social media internships through alternative means.
