Recurrent episodes of severe swelling of the skin and mucous membranes (also known as attacks) are a feature of the disease known as Hereditary Angioedema (HAE). After puberty, attacks typically become more frequent. Attacks most frequently target these three body parts: The face (including the lips and eyes), hands, arms, legs, genitalia, and buttocks are the most frequently affected areas of skin. Even though skin swelling is typically not dangerous and only lasts a short while, it can still cause pain, dysfunction, and disfigurement. The stomach, intestines, bladder, and/or urethra may all be involved in the gastrointestinal tract. Symptoms like nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, and abdominal pain may result from this. Upper airway obstruction can result from structures like the tongue and larynx. Most attacks that affect the airways end before they become completely blocked.
