Quick Eye Care Steps

We must never take our eyes for granted. It is a vital organ of our body that needs to be maintained and protected. Let us have a look at some of the easy and quick eye care steps that we must follow:

  1. Maintain a well-balanced diet- Good eye health depends on what you eat throughout the day. Some essential nutrients like lutein, omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins C and E, and zinc helps ward off age-related eye problems like cataracts and macular degeneration. To keep away these vision problems, you must fill your plate with:

  • Green leafy vegetables such as kale, collards, and spinach.

  • Oily fishes like Tuna, Salmon, etc.

  • Nuts, eggs, beans, and other protein sources (non-meat).

  • Oysters.

  • Citrus fruits like oranges.

A good diet will help you maintain an optimum weight that will lower your chances of having obesity and other related diseases like type 2 diabetes. Diabetes is one of the major reasons for adult blindness.

  1. Quit smoking- Smoking increases the chances of getting cataracts, macular degeneration and damaging your optic nerve, among other medical problems. You must always try to quit smoking altogether as there are more chances of you succeeding if you keep trying to quit it. You can also take the help of a medical practitioner.

  2. Wear sunglasses- You must wear the right pair of sunglasses that will protect your eyes from the harmful rays of the sun. As too many UV rays increase your chances of getting cataracts and other eye-damaging diseases. Choose sunglasses that help block 99-100% UVB and UVA rays. Lenses protect the sides and polarized lenses reduce glare. These do not offer added protection but are still helpful. Some lenses also offer UV protection but it is still best to wear sunglasses for added protection.

  3. Use safety eyewear- If you work with airborne or hazardous materials at home or on the job then you must wear safety glasses. These protective glasses are also worn while playing certain sports like racquetball, lacrosse, and hockey as they can lead to an eye injury. Helmets with sports goggles or protective face masks with polycarbonate lenses provide a shield for your eyes.

  4. Avoid staring at the Computer screen for too long- You must avoid staring at the phone or computer screen for prolonged hours. Doing this can lead to:

  • Blurry vision

  • Eyestrain

  • Dry eyes

  • Neck, shoulder, and back pain.

  • Headaches

  • Trouble focusing

Therefore, to provide extra protection to your eyes, you must do the following:

  • Make sure your contacts or glasses are up to date.

  • Talk to your doctor if your eye strain is not relieved.

  • Look down at the screen by keeping your eyes and the top of your screen at one level.

  • Avoid glare from lights and windows. You can also use anti-glare if needed.

  • Choose a supportive and comfortable chair to position your feet flat on the floor.

  • To avoid dry eyes, blink more often or use artificial tears.

  • Rest your eyes by taking breaks for 20 minutes. Look 20 ft away for at least 20 seconds. Take a 15-minute break by getting up every 2 hours.
