India records second-biggest single-day spike in Covid-19 cases
India recorded a second-biggest single-day spike in Covid-19 cases on May 20 taking the overall tally to 1.1 lakh. On Thursday 5,609 new cases were detected, but on the brighter side, the recovery rate among Covid-19 positive patients witnessed a momentous jump to nearly 40 percent from about seven percent before the lockdown began on March 25, The Union Health Ministry said.
According to May 21st, 8 PM Health Ministry update, the total number of cases in the country are 1,12,359. The total number of active cases undergoing treatment at hospitals are 63,624 and those who have already recovered with the negative report are 45,299. As many as 3,435 people have died all together linked to the virus, the ministry said.
The ministry reported that hospital support was needed by less than 7 percent of patients.
Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat and Delhi in that order are the worst-hit states. Maharashtra alone has recorded a total of 40,000 cases and maximum deaths at 1390.
Meanwhile, the government has given nod to the resumption of domestic flights in ‘calibrated manner’ from May 25 and while Indian railways have started online booking for 200 non-AC trains that start journey from June 1.
Globally, the number of Covid-19 cases have crossed a five-million mark with a total number of deaths worldwide crossing 3.25 lakh. Latin American countries have accounted for one-third of the new cases reported worldwide last week taking over Europe and the US in recording the highest number of daily cases.
