The most likely reason the numeric keyboard isn't functioning is that you've got Num Lock turned off. On certain keyboards that are fancy like my Logitech Craft keyboard that I'm currently typing on you may have difficulty trying to determine what the Num Lock key's name is, since it doesn't print the words on the key it self.
