For this methodology, these terminologies are utilized in specified ways. The ability to produce precise cuts with minimal blood loss is one of its advantages. Electrosurgical devices are frequently utilized in hospital operating rooms and outpatient treatments to assist prevent blood loss during surgery.

An electric current is used to heat the tissue during electrosurgical operations. Although electrical instruments that generate a hot probe can be used to cauterize tissue in some cases, electrosurgery is a separate technique from electrocautery. Heat conduction from a probe heated to a high degree by a direct electrical current is used in electrocautery (much in the manner of a soldering iron).
