There are an increasing number of onshore and offshore crude oil fields that are currently generating both crude oil and water emulsions.

Emulsions such as water in oil are separated with Demulsifier, also known as emulsion breakers, which are specialised chemicals. Demulsifiers are extensively used in the processing of crude oils, which are created using a sizable volume of saline water. Chemicals including epoxy resins, polyols, polyamines, phenol-formaldehyde, epoxides, and polyamines constitute the basis for demulsifiers. Either propylene oxide or ethylene oxide can be combined to control the demulsification strength of the aforementioned compounds .

To separate water from crude oil, specialised chemicals known as demulsifiers or emulsion breakers are needed. This oil is mixed with either injection water or natural formation water when it is extracted from reservoirs. As a result, major issues could arise if the maximum amount of water is not removed before refining the oil. Demulsifier can be divided into water-soluble and oil-soluble categories. These are frequently used to process crude oil, removing substantial amounts of saline water before refining to stop corrosion. Demulsifiers are used in sludge oil treatment, oil-based power plants, lubricant production, crude oil processing, and petroleum refining, among other applications.
