Because metabolites are thought to "act as spoken language, broadcasting signals from the genetic architecture and the environment," metabolomics is thought to offer a functional readout of an organism's physiological state that is immediate and accurate. Different organisms, tissues, and fluids have been examined using a variety of analytical technologies. The main tools for analysing many metabolites at once are mass spectrometry coupled with various chromatographic separation techniques, such as liquid or gas chromatography or NMR.
Despite metabolomics' highly developed and sensitive technology, there are still some technical difficulties. There is no single technology that can be used to examine the entire metabolome because of the enormous diversity of chemical structures and the vast differences in abundance.
