Scientists have proposed using NK cells to treat cancer cells because they selectively target cancerous or virally infected cells because of their decreased MHC class I levels. The patient's white blood cells are initially removed, activated, and permitted to multiply. The cancerous cells are then targeted when they are reintroduced into the body.

As shown by NKD, natural killer cells are essential for the innate immune system's proper operation and their absence has dire consequences. The immune system may be able to eliminate tumours with few side effects if these cells are targeted specifically at the cancerous cells. This would be an exciting new approach to treating cancer.
