Trichloroisocyanurate is a syntheticcompound having the basic formula (C3Cl3O3). It's widely used as an industrialdeodorizer, bleaching agent, disinfectant, and stabilizer in organic synthesis. This yellow crystalline powder, with a distinctly chlorine-like"smelling" smell, is sometimes sold as a domestic ingredient intablet or granular form for household and commercial use. Trichloroisocyanuricacids are insoluble in water, so they're not soluble in oil, grease, or othersubstances. In order to effectively remove chlorine gas from swimming pools, one would need more than just trichloroisocyanuric acid.

While there are no known negativehealth effects of this disinfectant, there are a few potential environmentalhazards associated with it. This chemical compound can be removed throughsimple bleaching, but the removal process weakens the compound, which couldlead to degradation in water sources over time. If this happens, chemicals suchas chlorine could be added to the water supply to replace the weakened trichloroisocyanuricacid compound. Researchers believe that if this happens, the chlorinewill become necessary to protect public drinking water sources from exposure tothe weakened compound.
