When moving across state lines, this is known as interstate movement. Moving is stressful enough with packing boxes and moving preparation, but interstate moving involves more. One important thing to know is that there are requirements that interstate moving companies must meet. When moving across state lines, each state has its own guidelines. Movers that move homes from one state to another are regulated by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and are legally required to do the following:
• Display your US Department of Transportation (DOT) number in any advertisement. Your DOT number is the identifier of the company the truck belongs to which also collects and monitors the moving company safety information that was acquired during an audit, accident investigations, compliance reviews, and inspections.
• Get licensed by the FMCSA
• Provide arbitration if a client's complaint cannot be resolved amicably. The FMCSA does not have the authority to resolve any claims against interstate moving companies, but if there is a problem, the customer can file a complaint against the company by calling the FMSCA.

• Allow owners to review the list of charges and fees.
• Provide the customer with an accurate summary of how the complaint handling procedures, including a phone number
Interstate moving companies charge their clients a fee that is based on what they will be moving in, so to make it less expensive, try to get rid of things you don't need before contacting a moving company. If this is your first time moving, don't hire the first company you see on the Internet or in the phone book. You must get quotes from at least three different companies. You need to check their reputation and how trustworthy they are.
When interviewing moving companies in person or over the phone, you should ask the following questions.
• How long have they been in business as a company?
• Make sure they are properly licensed and insured.
• You should check to see if they have a DOT number affixed correctly.
• Does the company outsource your work to other moving services? If you decide to hire the company you are interviewing, you don't want to know that another moving company you don't know about is moving your household belongings.
• Does the moving company take extra precautions to prevent fragile items from being damaged during the move?
• Do you offer an option to purchase insurance to cover any damage to household items beyond a preset amount?
