The vaccinestimulates the immune response and helps reduce the effects of futureinfections caused by pathogens in humans. Novel technologies, such asviral-like particles, are extensively used in development of the Human PapillomaVirus (HPV) and Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) vaccines. Vaccines can be prophylactic(to prevent or ameliorate the effects of a future infection by a natural orwild pathogen), or therapeutic (to fight a disease that has already occurred, such as cancer). The administration of vaccines is called vaccination.
