Ovulation discomfort, which affects some women, causes pelvic pain. Ovulation happens when an egg is released from an ovary during the menstrual cycle. During the second half of the menstrual cycle, ovulation frequently takes place. Ovulation pain is also referred to as "Mittelschmerz."
