The fluoroquinolone drug enrofloxacin is used to treat bacterial infections. It is used 'off label' or 'extra label' in dogs to treat some infections and in small animals, birds, and reptiles. In veterinary medicine, many medications are regularly administered for off-label use. The antibiotic enrofloxacin is harmful to humans. It's only for veterinary usage. Unless the severity of the infection warrants it, enrofloxacin should not be used in pregnant, lactating, or immature dogs. Enrofloxacin has the potential to reduce the seizure threshold (meaning that it can facilitate seizures).
The most common gastrointestinal side effects of enrofloxacin are vomiting, diarrhoea, and a loss of appetite. Uncoordinated walking, seizures, sadness, lethargy, allergic reactions, urinary crystals, and anxiousness have all been observed on very rare occasions. Elevated liver enzymes might be seen on blood tests.
