Although most people identify sleep with rest and relaxation, recent research has revealed that insufficient sleep can lead to increased stress levels. Adults, according to the National Sleep Foundation, require 7-8 hours of sleep per night to function well. However, roughly a third of Americans say they sleep less than 6 hours every night. Because their minds are continuously racing, many people who are overly stressed may find it difficult to obtain a decent night's sleep. Weight gain, impaired immune system function, and an increased risk of chronic diseases like heart disease and stroke can all be linked to a lack of quality sleep.
