If you look up the best instagrammable destinations on the planet, there is a high chance that you will find Sydney in almost every one of them. Sydney is one of the most coveted travel destinations in the world; from its staggering harbour and massive national parks to the lesser known brewery crawls and seasonal markets, there is something going on for all kinds of travellers.
How about next time you visit Sydney, consider straying off the most trodden trails and enjoy some of it’s less-known but equally exciting activities and attractions. If you find yourself in Sydney in near the future, swap the usual touristy things with these underrated gems.
Party boat hire on Sydney Harbour
So you’re in the Emerald City for only a short time, and you're down to two options: check out its most beloved icons or have a private party with your best mates. Well, what if I tell you can do both, at the same time! Yes, you heard that right. Cruise around the sprawling harbour in your own private boat, soaking up views of all the famous attractions while raising a toast with your beloved! The best part about a boat party hire on Sydney Harbour is that you can charter an entire vessel of your choice, customise it with the way you want and tailor it according to your budget and preferences. With scintillating views, state-of-the-art amenities, an expert crew and a wide selection of menus to choose from, you are guaranteed to have a memorable time in the city!
Jaw-dropping festival and arts
Carriageworks is a well-acclaimed multi-arts centre, located in the old Eveleigh Rail Yards building at Wilson Street. What once was a massive blacksmith workshop and a railway carriage, was taken into arms by the Arts NSW programme, transforming into a hub of art and culture, supporting both Australian and international artists while doing so. If you're a fan of revolutionary art, 19th century architecture, and urban exploration, then you don’t even need to think twice about visiting this iconic venue. From provocative art exhibitions and uplifting music concerts to international fashion weeks, major cultural festivals and weekend markets, you’ll easily find something that catches your interest. Just be sure to check their website before heading out.
Bird’s eye view of Sydney
While this may not be as under-the-radar as others, I don’t think anyone can overrate the panoramic view of Sydney’s eastern coastline, from way above the ground. For many this may not be easy on the wallet, but if you're looking for a rather overlooked and unique once-in-a-lifetime experience, it can't get any better than this. During a scenic flight tour, every passenger enjoys an incredible view no matter the seat they're in, so be sure to bring those cameras up with you as there’s no doubt you’ll get all snappy and happy.
Drag shows
You’ll see plenty of rainbow flags flying high all over the city and while the annual Mardi Gras is one of the much-awaited annual events on the calendar, there is a side of Sydney that still stays hidden from the usual traveller. The quarter side of the city is famous for its drag shows and cabarets, which can be enjoyed at lunch, dinner or late into the night. Some of the best recommendations I have ever got were the legendary Imperial Hotel, which offers a Drag N’ Dine event every week, and the Stonewall Hotel, which has a massive dance floor with drag shows on the weekend.
It doesn’t matter if you're visiting Sydney for the first or 21st time, these underrated activities are sure to give you a bang for buck!
