The Colour
The most logical place to start would be with the color. What color or color scheme is your recipient using? If you know the answer to this question, then you can buy accordingly. But if you don't know, don't stress about it. You can never go wrong with white so just buy a set of those and package them up with a bright colored ribbon.
The Texture
Towels come in several different textures so you will be choosing this based on your recipient's preference (if you know it), your preference (what kind YOU would like to have), or your budget. The most well-known textures are velour, cotton terry, and luxury towels such as the ultra-absorbent Egyptian cotton towels.
The Number of Towels
Towels can be purchased individually but are readily available and a better bargain packaged as sets. The most popular choices are the 2- and 6-piece sets although there are also 3- and 8-piece and sometimes 12-piece sets to choose from. The packaged sets will contain different combinations of bath towels, hand towels, washcloths, spa gift set, and bath sheets.
