A lubricant (also spelled lube) is a substance that aids in the reduction of friction between surfaces in mutual contact, thereby reducing the heat generated when the surfaces move. It may also be used to transmit forces, transport foreign particles, or heat or cool the surfaces. Lubricity is the property of reducing friction.
Lubricants are used for a variety of purposes aside from industrial applications. Cooking (oils and fats used in frying pans and baking to prevent food sticking), bioapplications on humans (e.g. lubricants for artificial joints), ultrasound examination, medical examination, and sexual intercourse are some of the other uses. It is primarily used to reduce friction and contribute to the smooth and efficient operation of a mechanism.
