A companion diagnostic (CDx) is a diagnostic test that is used in conjunction with a therapeutic drug to ascertain whether or not it is appropriate for a particular patient.
To help in the selection or exclusion of patient groups for treatment with a specific drug based on their biological characteristics that determine responders and non-responders to the therapy, companion diagnostic is co-developed with drugs.
Companion biomarkers, which are biomarkers that potentially aid in predicting likely response or severe toxicity, are the foundation upon which companion diagnostics are developed.
