High fidelity simulators are used in mannequin-based simulations, including breathing, heart-thumping, and palpable-pulse mannequins. The mannequin also features a monitor that may provide data such as an EKG, a pulse oximeter, blood pressure, arterial waveforms, pulmonary artery waveforms, anaesthetic gases, etc. The simulators can be used to practise procedures including bag-mask ventilation, intubation, defibrillation, placing chest tubes, cricothyrotomy, and others.
Future and practising physicians can "practise on plastic" before patients by using mannequins in clinical simulations. These lifelike mannequins simulate heart tones and other vital cues that, when connected to monitors, provide real-time information to students. The reality of mannequin-based simulations allows for virtual feedback using computers that regulate the mannequin's compressors, mimicking pulses and chest raising.
