They are built to sail around the world in luxury and speed, reaching speeds of up to 15-20 knots and sailing at 80 to 90% of true wind speed.
In the second half of the twentieth century, a catamaran, a twin-hulled sailing, and propelled boat were designed for sport and enjoyment. It is based on a raft of two logs connected by planks that had previously been utilized by peoples throughout the Indonesian archipelago, Polynesia, and Micronesia. Catamarans were formerly up to 21.3 meters (70 feet) long, paddled by a large number of men, and used for visiting war, and exploration. Voyages of over 3,704 km (2,000 miles) were done, especially once the sail was fitted.
A catamaran (informally, a "cat") is a multi-hulled watercraft with two equal-sized parallel hulls. It's a geometry-stabilized craft, with stability derived from its wide beam rather than a ballasted keel like a monohull boat. Catamarans have a smaller hull volume, less displacement, and a shallower draught (draught) than monohulls of similar length. The combined hulls have lower hydrodynamic resistance than comparable monohulls, needing less propulsive power from sails or motors. When compared to a monohull, the catamaran's wider stance on the water can lessen both heeling and wave-induced motion, as well as reduce wakes.
