The chemical compound resorcinol (or resorcin) has the formula C6H4(OH)2. The 1,3-isomer is one of three isomeric benzenediols (or meta-isomer). Resorcinol is a white needle that crystallizes from benzene and is soluble in water, alcohol, and ether, but not chloroform or carbon disulfide.
Resorcinol, also known as m-dihydroxybenzene, is a phenolic molecule that is used to make resins, plastics, colors, pharmaceuticals, and a variety of other organic chemical compounds. It's made by sulfonating benzene with fuming sulfuric acid and then fusing the resulting benzene sulfonic acid with caustic soda in massive volumes. The reaction with formaldehyde yields resins that can be used to impregnate rayon and nylon with rubber and as adhesives. Resorcinol is a chemical intermediate that is used to make colors, explosives, and medications, as well as photographic developers and cosmetics. It is used as an antifungal in ointments and lotions in medicine.
