Plant-based Vaccines

Plant-based Vaccines were originally created in 1989 at The Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, California, by a group of researchers led by A. Hiatt. The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) validated that plant-derived vaccines could induce an adequate immunological response ten years later, in 1998. The United States Department of Agriculture authorised the first plant-derived vaccination in 2006. The only plant-derived vaccine licenced for use in the United States is this vaccine, which was approved to protect poultry against the Newcastle disease virus (NDV).

Recombinant technology is used to create Plant-based Vaccines, in which the gene encoding the required antigen protein is incorporated into the plant genome. For gene transfer and transformation, Agrobacterium tumefaciens is extensively utilised. New techniques for transformation, including as sonication, biolistic bombardment, PEG-mediated, and electroporation, are being employed as technology advances.
