Depending on where it comes from, fructose can either be a natural sugar or an added sugar. When we eat it straight from complete plant foods, it is regarded as a natural sugar. When we consume packaged goods and drinks that have had fructose-containing sugars (such crystalline fructose, high fructose corn syrup, or sucrose) added during production, it is referred to as an added sugar.

While there is no recognised recommendation for the consumption of fructose, current dietary advice suggests keeping added sugar intake to less than 10% of total calories, or less than 50 grammes if you consume 2,000 calories per day. Six out of ten American people consume more added sugar than is advised.
