Today's data centers are often equipped with renewable energy sources. A prime example is solar energy. Photovoltaic cells can generate clean, renewable power that can power data centers, servers, and backup generators during the daytime. Solar panels can also reduce greenhouse gases and help decrease the reliance on fossil fuels. However, some of the most efficient, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly options to meet data center power requirements are geothermal systems and hydropower. Both of these provide energy directly from the earth, without the use of fossil fuels or other harmful pollutants.
Today, one of the major issues facing by power systems is the over-reliance on power plants that are using high levels of greenhouse gases to provide electricity. The Environmental Protection Agency or the EPA has forecasted that by the year 2021, the use of these power plants will be the main cause of global warming. As such, it has formulated a series of guidelines for controlling the emission of greenhouse gases. Among these guidelines is the Clean Power Plan that provides an implementation plan for each of the electric transmission and distribution companies across the country.
