Cell-free protein synthesis (CFPS) is a method of protein expression that eliminates the use of live cells in the production of a target protein. In many systems, a solution containing protein synthesis machinery derived from a cell lysate is employed.
A contamination- and toxic-element-free method is predicted to help the industry develop. Because there are fewer living bacteria/cells in the cell-free protein expression system, there are fewer chances of contamination. Furthermore, the lack of nuclease activity assures the integrity of linear DNA templates during protein synthesis and provides all purified components necessary to produce a recombinant protein in vitro. In cell-free systems, proteins that can be harmful when expressed in living cells can simply be expressed. The use of cell-free protein expression in applied biologic investigations and genomics is projected to increase as a result of these qualities.
