The guiding assumption of the English major at Ashoka University is that all literature entails imaginative movement outside oneself and/or the bounds of the familiar. This movement across time, space and culture has created an ensemble of phenomena crucial to the creation of English language and literature. Such movement speaks to the material realities of the twenty-first-century, and in particular to Ashoka University’s mission of putting seemingly separate disciplines in dynamic dialogue with each other. Thus, the study of English at Ashoka cannot take place without some exposure to philosophy, history, politics, sociology, economics, psychology, biology, environmental studies, and even physics.
