But First, Remember 482 Visa Has 3 Different Streams, and Check Your Occupation
You might have been aware of it, but let me remind you that the 482 visa has 3 different streams, which are determined by the Skilled Occupation List. The Australian Government mainly uses 2 occupation lists in deciding a person’s 482 visa stream: Short-Term Skilled Occupation List and the Medium and Long-term Skilled Occupation List.
The 482 visa streams are:
- Short-term Stream
If your occupation is under Short Term Skilled Occupation List (STSOL), you will be granted a short-term stream, it is valid for 2 years.
- Medium-term Stream
If your occupation is under the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skill List (MLTSSL), you will be granted a Medium-term stream, and it is valid for either 3 or 4 years.
- Labour Agreement Stream
If your occupation is listed in the Government’s Labour occupation list, you will be granted a Labour Agreement stream, valid for a maximum of 4 years.

New to the List: Short-term Stream 482 Visa to PR in 2022
If you’re a holder of a 482 Visa short-term stream, 2022 is a great year for you.
Starting from 1 July 2022, you have a pathway to Australian permanent residency. The Australian Government has opened an Australian permanent residency pathway for short-term stream holders.
To get your short-term 482 visas to PR, you must be:
- An existing 482 visa holder
- Present in Australia on a 482 visa for at least 12 months between 01 February 2020 and 14 December 2021
- Employed by a suitable Australian employer for at least three years under a 482 visa
If you meet the above condition, you might continue your journey to stay longer in Australia by applying for an Employer Nomination Scheme (subclass 186) Temporary Resident Transition Stream. You must also meet the general requirement for this visa, and those are:
- Have the required skills and licensing/registration/membership
- Work for your employer for at least 3 years under the 482 visa
- Be nominated by your employer
- Be under 45 years old when you apply
- Have at least competent English
- Hold a 482 Visa
- Meet the health and character requirement

By holding the medium-term Stream 482 visa, you must meet the below requirements before applying for a 186 visa:
- Have the required skills and licensing/registration/membership
- Work for your employer for at least 3 years under the 482 visa
- Be nominated by your employer
- Be under 45 years old when you apply
- Have at least competent English
- Hold a 482 Visa
- Meet the health and character requirement
Since the medium-term Stream is valid for 4 years, there is a possibility that you might not need to extend your visa visa, so the cost would be:
