iPad Pro 12.9" 4th Gen Teardown: 5 Things You Need to Know - Rapid Repair

Touted to be a laptop killer in more ways than one, the all-new iPad Pro 12.9″ seems to be a robust tablet – without an iota of doubt. As expected, the iPad has got top-of-the-line specs like LiDAR scanner and a wicked fast processor to make a strong statement.

To take a close look at the innards just the way we recently dug into the iPhone 12 Series and Apple Watch Series 5, we are all set for the iPad Pro 12.9″ 4th gen teardown. If you are a bit curious to figure out what the high-end tablet has got in-store or for that matter whether or not the repairing has become cost-effective, let’s jump right in to underline the 5 major points!

The very first thing that we would like to underline is the modular design of USB-C port. What makes the USB port’s modular design worth taking note of is that it has opened the gate of independent replacement. From a repairing perspective, it’s a plus.

The removal of a physical home button has not only made the 12.9″ iPad Pro 2020 look modern but also played a vital role in simplifying the repairing process. By getting rid of a common failure point, it has made repairing slightly more straightforward.

Well, that is not to suggest that the overall repairing of the iPad Pro 12.9″ 2020 should be a cakewalk. All we are trying to emphasize is that the servicing of the iPad will no longer seem to be a herculean affair.

Not that the battery of the previous 12.9″ iPad Pro models lacked security, Apple seems to have further enhanced the safeguards of the battery in the latest iteration of the high-end iPad. So, what has done the trick this time around?

Based on what we have discovered, the incorporation of stretch-release tabs and the non-removable adhesive has worked pretty well in offering an extra shield to the battery. Considering how essential it is from the durability perspective, we welcome the decision to offer an additional layer of safeguard to the battery. However, the presence of non-removable adhesive has made the job of repairing a tedious affair.

Though the integration of LCD and front panel glass has strengthened the durability, it has made the opening procedure a little complicated. Apart from making the repairing a bit complex, it has also increased the cost of iPad Pro 12.9″ repair. So, if you had been expecting respite in screen repairing cost, you may feel a little disappointed.

Another thing that has got a negative marking is the excessive use of adhesive. Apple has used gobs of adhesive to keep all the components securely in place. While there is no denying the fact that it has enhanced durability, the adhesive seems to have become one of the major hindrances that have prevented the 4th-gen iPad Pro 12.9″ from scoring high on the repairability parameter.

Not that we were expecting a drastic change in Apple’s approach towards making the 12.9″ Pad Pro 4th generation repairing a straightforward task, we are a little disappointed with the overall approach due mainly to one main reason – lack of interest. The reason why we say it because Apple could have easily softened its stance on many things without endangering the durability of the iPad Pro.

By using gobs of adhesive all over the place, the Cupertino-based company has made it crystal clear that it still wants to have firm control over the iPad Pro repairability. That means your pricey iPad Pro continues to rank along the middle of the table on the repairability leaderboard.
