Before diving straight into the solutions, it would be apt to understand why the error 4013 occurs on iPhones. This error mostly crops up when the device faces issues while being restored or updated.

It could be due to sudden disconnection from iTunes, or if iTunes fails to prompt the device to finish the update or restore process. Though its mainly caused due to Software related issues, it can also happen if the iOS files cannot be written on the device properly.

The very first solution that we would recommend you to try out is to install the latest version of iTunes on your computer. More often than not, the problem occurs due to the outdated version of iTunes. So, ensure that it’s updated on your computer.

Install Latest Version of iTunes

To do it, launch iTunes on your computer. Then, click on the Help menu and select Check for Updates. Now, follow the prompts to update iTunes as usual.

Whenever we run into complex or miscellaneous iOS issues, the one trick that we don’t want to miss out on is the force restart aka hard reset. It’s got the knack of fixing a random glitch that tends to sneak in from time to time.

To force restart your iPhone 8 or later: Press and quickly release the volume up button. Then press and release the volume down button. After that, hold down the side button until you see the Apple logo on the screen.

To force restart iPhone 7 and 7 Plus: Press and hold the side button and volume down button at once, until the Apple logo appears on the screen.

To force restart iPhone 6s or earlier: Press and hold the home button and the side button simultaneously.

Once your iPhone has rebooted, try to update/restore. If you don’t face any issues along the way, you are good to go!

This step is only for Windows. Sometimes a simple step such as running iTunes as Administrator can fix this issue. If running iTunes normally doesn’t give it enough privileges to write the iOS on your device, this step can be helpful. Simply find iTunes in Start Menu, right click on it, go to More and click Run as Administrator. If you are not logged in via Admin account, you may be prompted to enter the Admin password.

Faulty or uncertified cables are known to create issues while trying to restore or upgrade via Computer. So, if the above 3 steps have been unsuccessful, be sure to try a different cable. Ensure that the new cable is an original or at the least certified (MFA) cable.

Outdated OS not only makes a device vulnerable to malicious attacks but also tends to create a lot of unexpected issues. Therefore, if you haven’t updated your Mac or Windows PC for a while, chances are pretty high that the problem could be due to the outdated software. So, update the software on your computer.

On macOS: Navigate to System Preferences > Software Update and then download the latest version of macOS.
