Tesla Hits Powerwall Milestone

The company isn’t known for routinely reporting on individual product sales, however, Tesla has recently clocked up a significant milestone for its Powerwall solar batteries. Since 2016 when Tesla released the Powerwall 2, it has seen significant uptake, with the brand being favored as the premium solar battery storage solution on the market in many countries. Now, Tesla has confirmed it has reached 250,000 Powerwall installations

Continuous growth

When Powerwall 2 was released in 2016, Tesla had tens of thousands of pre-orders for the units. In 2021, the Powerwall+ was released to similar fanfare, with the company reporting an early backlog of over 80,000 units.

The recent figures show that Tesla has been operating on about 100,000 Powerwall deployments each year, which represents around 1.4GWh of energy capacity. Their other energy storage solutions, namely Powerpack and Megapack still make up the majority of their annual capacity deployment, clocking in at around 2.6GWh combined.

However, the announcement of 250,000 Powerwall units deployed by November 2021 has only made the product more popular, and as such, they are expecting to ramp up production.

Can Tesla deploy Powerwalls faster?

The keen interest in Powerwall+ may still be resulting in backlogs early in 2022, however, Tesla says this isn’t the main reason for slower supply. Of course, supply chains around the world have been affected by Covid, but this is only part of the problem.

Tesla says that battery cell supply and production is the main constraint to how quickly they can manufacture solar battery products. This is coupled with the fact they prioritize supply to their electric vehicles, which are always growing in popularity.

Considering battery storage?

Battery storage is a great way to save even more money on electricity bills. Installing products like the Tesla Powerwall 2 allows you to capture excess solar energy generated during the day so that you can use it at night. This gives you zero-emission, free electricity 24/7 provided your system generates enough energy.

There is an additional upfront cost that comes with battery storage, as the technology is still new compared to a standard on-grid solar installation that includes solar panels and an inverter. However, many people enjoy the opportunity to break free from the electricity companies and be more self-sufficient with their power needs.
