PlantSteroids Hold Promise for Increase in Muscle Mass and Improve PhysicalPerformance: When we talk about building muscles and physical performance, mustard green and cabbage can be very helpful. Research findings has shown thatmustard green and other Brassica plants (e.g. cabbage or broccoli) containbrassinosteroids, which creates similar results as anabolic steroids. Manyresearchers are looking for these substances that can be used to give safe, natural and effective ways to promote endurance and athletic performance forus.
Research andpresentations recently published at the conference attract attention from theauthors of the study – Dr. Debora Esposito, a Postdoctoral Associate, RutgersUniversity, hosted by the N.C. State University Plants for Human HealthInstitute; Dr. Slavko Komarnytsky, Metabolic Biologist and Assistant Professor,Plants for Human Health Institute, and Dr. Ilya Raskin of Rutgers.
DR. ESPOSITO STUDIES HOW A PLANTSTEROID CAN AFFECT THE MUSCLE CELL IN RATS.
The study involvedrat skeletal muscle cells and exposed them to different quantities ofhomobrassinolide, a plant steroid. After that, they measured the turnover ofproteins and observed that muscle cells react to brassinosteroids by raisingcellular protein synthesis and reducing cellular protein degradation. Theresult was a significant increase in the protein content of the net muscle.Afterwards, healthy rats were fed by homobrassinolide daily for 24 days. Thebody weight, food consumption and body composition of those rats were measured. The rats fed to the plant steroid reported an increase in lean body mass overthose not fed to the substance. The findings of the study also demonstrates agrowth in the number and size of muscle fibers that was essential for increasedathletic fitness.
RESEARCHERS REVIEW THE RESULT OFTHE RESEARCH OF PLANT STEROID.
Results indicate thatbrassinosteroid therapy could represent a good alternative method to recoverdamaged muscles cells. Dr. Esposito also said that we may be able to growplants with higher brassinosteroid content and create food ingredients that cancure diseases and increase athletic performance In the long term.
