Step 1 : Collecting stem cells: This step takes many days. Initially, you will get injections of certain medications to increase your stem cells. Followed by this, the health care team will collect the stem cells through a vein in your chest or arm.
Step 2 : Pre-transplant treatment: The step takes 5-10 days. In this process, the patient will be given a high dose of chemotherapy and in some conditions, radiation therapy is done too. The pre-transplant treatment is done with great care.
Step 3: Getting back the stem cells: This process covers up the patient’s transplant treatment. The duration is 30 minutes for this treatment. This process is also known as an infusion. The stem cells are put back to the patient’s bloodstream through the catheter. In some cases, patients can have more than one infusion.
Step 4: Recovery phase: Doctors will monitor the patient’s cell’s growth and recovery. The patient will be given antibiotics to reduce infection. The patient’s health care team will also treat in case of any infection. The health care team closely monitors your health and the stem cells, if they are setting well. In between if the patient feels any discomfort or imbalance. It will be checked and corrected.
