Short stories are more creative than novels because they can create a sense of mystery and suspense. This is because short stories are not as detailed as novels, making it easier for readers to stay engaged.
The main difference between short stories and novels is that the latter has a lot of details that can drag the reader away from the story. In order to keep readers engaged, short stories must be creative and unique.
People tend only to read short stories and short story books. In 2022, the Book Writers Association of America (BAWA) published this statistic: 75% of fiction books feature short stories exclusively or mixed with novellas. In need of shorter and more creative pieces, 88.9% of the money made from published collections went back to the authors. There are more prominent authors in anthologies than novels when looking at their contributions to the industry. Novels use many characters and plotlines, while anthologies focus on highly specific topics that word count restricts. This is why anthologies are seen as more creative because they're not bogged down with multiple narratives/conflicting plotlines or overwhelming detail-filled narratives.
Many creative writing experts say that everything that could be written has been already written, and everything that's now published is a rehash of the same old plot lines and same old characters with a different spin on them.
And this is partially true. Most books are like that simply because there's only a limited amount of plots that can be contained in the demanding novel format.
I have found through experience that the only format that allows for the expression of true originality is the short story, and to be more precise flash fiction.
This is because flash fiction isn't written like most novels. Most novels are planned with an outline and carefully calculated. The analytical left brain dominates the writing process of those novels and doesn't allow the writer to create anything fully authentic or unique.
Short stories are generally written in a completely different way. They are written through freewriting, the author just writes without hesitation or criticism of what he writes. In this process, the analytical portion of our brain shuts off and we're able to express true creativity and authenticity.
And that's why they are becoming more and more popular in the marketplace. The consumer is now bored with the same old boring plots and wants something authentic and new, and only short stories can deliver on this promise.
Additionally, short stories allow for far more options. You can easily transform a short story into a short film and even a movie with some editing. (The movie Candyman was based on a very short story by Clive Barker), novels on the other hand, are so long that without changing them substantially, you simply can't put them on the big screen.
So in summary, short stories are far more creative than novels because they use the subconscious mind in the writing process in a far greater way. In contrast, novels have to rely on the analytical mind to push the writer through the long and tedious process of writing a very long novel (a novel has to be at least 50 000 words to be considered for publication).
“The Supreme Entity: Phoenix” by Rielly Ammer
As I make my way through college after my father's disappearance and fleeing New Asgard, something odd happens that changes my life for years to come. My story may be short, but the imagery is worth countless. With my newfound voice in my head and ally, we shall look for answers to why I was dealt such a painful hand.
Reading story books can help children develop a love for reading. Storybooks also provide an opportunity for parents to teach their children about different cultures and the world around them.
